The Difference Between Botox® and Fillers

As you get older — and lines and wrinkles appear where your skin was once smooth or facial features that were once firm begin to sag — it’s tempting to search for a quick fix to help you look younger. But as with any cosmetic procedure, it’s best to do a little research before you let someone inject solutions into some of the most delicate areas of your face.

Here at A Body Renaissance in Santaquin, Utah, we’ve taken the guesswork out of injectables like Botox® and dermal fillers so you can make an informed decision as to which aesthetic treatments are right for you.

Of course, our experienced nurse practitioner and expert cosmetic injector, Jennifer Trinidad, DNP, puts your safety first and only performs Botox and dermal filler injections in a sterile medical setting. When you combine Jennifer’s expertise with the Botox or fillers that are right for your individual needs, you’re sure to get the best results for keeping your features and your skin looking younger.

What is Botox?

You’ve undoubtedly heard about friends or colleagues getting Botox injections to smooth out wrinkles across their foreheads, and at the outer corners of their eyes. But what exactly is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved purified form of botulinum toxin, which temporarily paralyzes muscles. It’s highly effective at smoothing out the frown lines between your eyebrows, the wrinkles across your forehead, and the crow’s feet around your eyes.

While you can still make your usual facial expressions after receiving Botox, wrinkles in your skin appear less severe and smoother because your underlying muscles contract less. You don’t notice a difference immediately after your appointment, but in 24-48 hours, you begin to see a younger version of yourself smiling back at you from the mirror.

Botox typically lasts 3 months or more, so you don’t have to think about it again until it’s time for a touch-up treatment to maintain your look. Jennifer creates an individualized Botox treatment plan based on your goals.

How do fillers work?

Dermal fillers, such as the Juvéderm® collection, contain hyaluronic acid. Your body naturally produces hyaluronic acid when you’re younger, but production declines as you age. Hyaluronic acid helps keep your skin supple, firm, and able to hold moisture.

Fillers are a gel solution that replaces some of this lost hyaluronic acid when Jennifer injects them into specific areas of your facial skin that have begun to wrinkle or sag. Dermal fillers help plump up areas in your face that have experienced fat loss, causing your features to appear sunken. Juvéderm fillers can add volume to sagging cheeks, smooth out the lines around your nose and mouth, and make your lips appear fuller

Just like with Botox, Jennifer customizes a dermal filler treatment plan that helps you achieve and maintain a more youthful appearance. You typically see the results of fillers immediately following your appointment, and with Juvéderm, you can often keep wrinkles and sagging skin at bay for up to two years.

The main differences between Botox and fillers

While Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles that lead to wrinkles, Juvéderm and other types of dermal fillers don’t affect the muscles in your face. Instead, fillers do just what their name implies — they fill in specific areas of your face to restore volume for a more youthful appearance.

Depending on which areas of your face you want to enhance, Jennifer may recommend a combination of Botox and dermal fillers for optimal results.
